“Build it and they will come.” Seriously?

I’ve always disapproved of this saying, not only because it’s the worst business advice ever (a close second being ‘It doesn’t matter if no-one gets it, as long as YOU love it!’)…

…but also because it gives new entrepreneurs false hope, and career professionals the excuse to wait around and hope to be noticed, instead of clearly communicating what they want and why they should get it.

When it comes to your personal brand, the plan works if you work it.

And the trick people miss is that there IS a plan, beyond the initial work to clarify your brand, and it takes consistent and continual effort to grow your brand by following that plan.

It’s like building a new website but not telling anyone it’s there (through social media, listings, word of mouth etc.). People get so excited about the ‘launch’ of their shiny new website but forget to direct traffic to it, then wonder why they hear crickets. Remember just how BIG the internet is?? No-one knows your little website is there.

To some extent, it’s the same with your LinkedIn profile. A client asked recently whether we needed to change the content of his profile because since we set up his personal brand positioning and optimised his LinkedIn page a year ago, interest had waned. What he forgot in the busyness of his demanding role and everyday life, is that we also set up an ongoing communication plan to keep his target audience finding him on LinkedIn. Now, actioning this plan has become his priority.

Like this client, I work with a lot of senior professionals and businesspeople who don’t need a whole lot of new opportunities, they just want to direct more specific ones. Some of them are also very good at going out and finding those opportunities, making the ask. But all of them say they would like some of the best opportunities to simply find them.

The best plan is a combination of both these approaches. And in order to achieve the bit where they find you, they need to know you are there in the first place – and they need to be reminded.

Your personal brand – in other words, standing out for a specific reason to the right people and then staying on their radar – is not a one-and-done. First set it up with a clear message about who you are and what you bring, and then follow a simple but consistent plan to keep that message front and centre.

Many business owners and professionals understand the importance of developing authentic, regular content on LinkedIn to build a personal brand and be seen as a leading authority or thinker in their field.

But most people struggle with developing engaging, valuable content quickly and easily.

In a previous article I gave some tips for businesses looking to outsource some of their content writing, in order to ensure it remains authentic and on-brand. If you are having a go yourself – which is always preferable – here are some questions you should ask to ensure your article hits the mark.

1. What are you all about? Pick your themes.

Consistency of brand message means regularly writing on the same or similar topics, approaching them from different angles. For example, I regularly write about personal branding, but I may use different case studies to highlight different points about what is required for effective personal branding, and the difference this can make to people’s professional lives. I also discuss my approach to solving common problems with regard to personal branding.

Sticking to a handful of topics allows you to send a very clear message about your area of expertise, who you work with, and how you can help these people. If you are interested in a wide variety of topics, you may feel compelled to write about them, but being clear on your purpose for building content on LinkedIn will help you maintain some focus on important themes.

2. What does your ideal audience want to read? Think ‘WIIFM’.

I’ve worked with some clients who are very talented writers but don’t necessarily write effectively on LinkedIn. They may be very strong in another context, such as academic writing or writing business documents – but the purpose and audience for these are very different.

On LinkedIn, you probably want to connect with a prospective client, or people who can open doors for you… or perhaps you simply want to influence people to think differently and make change! You need to demonstrate what you know and what your unique approach or thinking is around topics that are of direct interest to them, within your field of expertise.

You also need to keep in mind that people don’t want to be sold to on LinkedIn; if they stop their busy day for a few minutes to read your article, they should be rewarded with helpful, interesting information they can use.

Finally, people want to engage with your material. Your readers are human beings, and human beings respond to context, stories, emotions and concrete examples. Give your advice a tangible anchor and make it come to life, with some great anecdotes or examples from your experience.

The single best piece of advice I can give you for articles that work is to read over your writing and ask: What’s in it for them?

3. What’s next? The call to action.

While people don’t want to be sold to, they do want to know how they can seek further help from you, if they like what you have to say!

Consider including a gentle call to action in your articles, particularly if they are not directly published on LinkedIn but on a website or blog, then shared as a link (more acceptable since a website is seen as a place to ‘sell’, but LinkedIn is not). If you are choosing to write directly on LinkedIn, rather than pepper your paragraphs with annoying, blog-like links back to your website, consider including an author bio at the end of your piece, with links to further information there.

4. How will you build credibility over time and stay fresh in your readers’ minds?

So you’ve written one or two great articles and received a little bit of interaction on LinkedIn… great start. But if you leave it there, your articles will have little effect.

Some of my top tips for making your finished articles work hard into the future:

Don’t post and forget. Re-post your articles a few times over a few weeks, using different intro lines.

Ensure your connections are relevant to your content and share directly with certain people for whom the content is highly relevant, as well as sharing publicly (but be careful not to direct-share or tag the same people in every time, as you will start to annoy them!).

Ten articles in March, then nothing until September? This does not make for great thought leadership! Aim to post articles once or twice a month on a regular basis – brainstorm some topics in advance, then schedule it in. Consistency is key.

In this series on ‘Online Personal Brand Tips for Crisis Mode’, I want to share some of my observations and the lessons we can take from them, when it comes to your personal brand (what you are presenting about yourself) online.

In this first article of the series, I’m sharing some observations and tips about the dangers of unchecked confusion and emotion online.

‘Well-intentioned misinformation’

I recently heard this wonderful phrase from an accountant who has spent the last few weeks deep-diving into the governments’ support packages as they are announced, in order to guide his clients in a timely way. He expressed frustration at the plentiful ‘well-intentioned misinformation’ that is circulating, where people are eager to help but where their advice may be premature or flawed.

It’s certainly tricky navigating the fast pace of change and the nuances of developments as they unfold and sometimes course-correct, but those in advisory roles or those seen as advisors to their audience need to be extra careful with what they are putting out there right now – not just because of the potential damage to their own reputation, but more importantly – because someone might be taking that advice.

In a recent video I described my own frustration at the irrelevance of some content where podcasters are continuing ‘business as usual’ and not giving sufficient thought to how advice about growing your business or making money etc. may be received right now. It’s not that this subject matter is no longer relevant; it’s that it can’t be treated in the same way as it was even a few weeks ago. As I mention in the video – this is resulting in hitting ‘unsubscribe’ as respect is lost.

Practical LinkedIn Tip on CONFUSION: Careful with what you endorse through ‘likes’

I have seen examples of very well-informed and skilful professionals writing posts with great information for their audience on LinkedIn… and then ‘liking’ every comment made on their post, whether the comment is helpful/well-informed or not.

Be aware that when you ‘like’ a comment someone has left on your post, it is not merely a ‘thank you’ for engaging with your material; it can be seen as an endorsement of what they are saying. So if what they are saying is factually incorrect, ensure you are not aligning with the actual comment by ‘liking it’. You can counter with the correct information, or you can ignore it, or you can remove the comment. Just don’t ‘like’ it automatically.

Video: My Number 1 Personal Brand Tip for right now

Who is the bigger person?

It’s perfectly acceptable to correct someone who provides information you know to be misguided. Or to defend your position if you know you are right and someone is criticising you. But how you choose to do this is what really matters.

As someone who shares content almost daily, I know how frustrating it is to be criticised publicly by someone who is saying something untrue or even ridiculous… or who hasn’t bothered to read your post properly before pointing out something they think you haven’t considered!

But that will only make you look bad if you descend to that level of exchange. As counterintuitive as it feels, try thanking them for the comment before continuing with a measured response.

I cannot believe the amount of comments I see on LinkedIn – what is meant to be a professional platform – that reveal their authors to be less than professional. Heated comments that are overly defensive or personally insulting (even if in a ‘subtle’ passive-aggressive way) achieve nothing more than a demonstration of someone’s deeper feelings of inferiority and lack of professional judgement in the moment.

I’m not saying emotion has no place in business – showing emotion is good when it is constructive, supportive, inspirational or serves to connect people. But acting out because you don’t like what someone is saying has no place in professional conversations.

Practical LinkedIn Tip on EMOTION: If you wouldn’t say it to their face, don’t say it online

The truth is most people wouldn’t say those things, in that tone, to someone’s face, particularly someone they have just met or barely know. So why would you do it online… where everyone can see your heated reaction?

The difference between those who get emotional and those who choose to be the bigger person gives us the best example of the gap in people’s personal brands. While some don’t even see what they are communicating about themselves… others are building deep trust through their everyday reactions and interactions online.

Hope this is helpful! If you have a topic you would like me to address in the ‘Online Personal Brand Tips for Crisis Mode’ series, please let me know!

In previous articles I gave practical tips for writing high quality articles and getting maximum visibility with great introductory short posts. Within these articles, I mentioned the importance of considering what your audience wants to see on LinkedIn.

Your audience on LinkedIn wants to see your knowledge, your experience, and your professionalism.

If you are a professional adviser or consultant with a professional audience, then your audience on LinkedIn wants to see your knowledge, your experience, and your professionalism.

And this is where so many LinkedIn trainings out there fall short – I am not afraid to say so. Most LinkedIn trainers take a generalised, often overly ‘salesy’ approach to teaching you to use LinkedIn, with little or no consideration for your personal brand and what your particular audience expects of you.

Professional people:

If you are connecting with people on LinkedIn and immediately sending them a direct message trying to sell your services, before a proper introduction or conversation, and without being asked for the information… you have been taking some bad advice from someone.

If you frequently tag a long list of people that you want to read your articles when you share them on LinkedIn… you have picked up a bad tip from somewhere. (Short term: great visibility. Long term: irreparable, widespread damage to your personal brand. There is a happy middle ground, but it requires a strategy or at least a moment’s thought.)

If you are firing off three posts a day and they are all promotional, repetitive, or don’t add anything of value to your professional sphere… you might be mistaking LinkedIn for Facebook.

For more extreme examples… check out the unbelievable but true behaviours I have observed breaking down people’s personal brands on LinkedIn.

I have previously spoken and written on the topic ‘Are you scared of LinkedIn?’ because many people are hesitant to give it a real go, not wanting to misstep and do their personal brand damage – fair enough. That is why you need to be clear on 1) what your personal brand represents, 2) what your particular target audience wants to see and 3) what the current expectations are around LinkedIn etiquette in your country/countries of business.

If you can answer those three questions, you will know what is and isn’t appropriate or effective in your communications on LinkedIn, and you will represent your personal brand with elegance and style.

What professional people need to do

This week I was putting together a visual flow chart of networking activities for a client in professional services, and it reminded me of one of my favourite questions:

What are the main actions that move the needle?

When it comes to professional advisors and consultants, the thing that makes the most difference to business growth is real-life human contact. This is because professional people are building long-term business relationships that require significant commitment from clients… and that requires the establishment of rapport and trust. This happens quickest through face-to-face meetings where you can chat about the potential client’s business problem and start to offer insight, or when you can demonstrate how you can help through a boardroom presentation to the leadership team.

The question then always becomes: How do I get in front of the ideal client to have these conversations?

What I see a lot of is:

· Frustration that clients seem to forget to refer others to the business, even though they love the work.

· Reluctance to spend time networking, because experience has been that it is awkward and/or a waste of time, or because there isn’t much time available to get out of the office to network.

· No real grasp on how LinkedIn can be used simply and powerfully, in targeted ways, to achieve specific goals.

· Overwhelm at the pace of change in digital marketing and feeling at a loss as to which tactics to choose, because of a lack of a clear, strategic plan.

The trouble is that the great majority of professional people use these tactics haphazardly, rather than in a purposeful, structured way – like the networking flowchart that I mentioned at the beginning of this article.

To get in front of the ideal client and be given the opportunity to engage with them, you need a planned pathway to get there. Sure, sometimes these opportunities land in your lap through a chance meeting or referral… but I am now hearing a lot of leadership teams saying there is not enough of this to keep moving the business forward.

“Sometimes opportunities land in your lap… but a lot of leadership teams are saying there is not enough of this”

So which activities move the needle?

Experience has taught me that for professional services, highlights of your networking flow chart should include:

· Establishing trust and awareness in what you do as quickly as possible, in order to be given opportunities to discuss your work and its fit with a potential client. To do this, your tactic should be to gain as many quality introductions from your existing network as possible.

· If you have done some research on who in your network may be able to provide an introduction, and you have come up short… chances are you need to expand your network. This may mean attending some carefully chosen, quality networking events, to meet people face-to-face, because it’s much easier to book a coffee with someone you’ve already met.

· When you do get that meeting, preparing for a great first impression by researching the client, thinking about great questions to ask to learn about their problems, and being ready with clear and specific communication (verbally and in materials) on how you can help this particularclient.

· Scheduling follow-ups and keeping good records of your conversations so that you can continue to build a meaningful and mutually beneficial relationship.

If you are a visual person, you may be able to imagine how these key steps can start to form a flow chart! But everyone is different, and will have different considerations. Each of the steps above also have so much in them to unpack… they may be raising questions like, ‘But howdo I create clear and specific communication on what we provide?’ / ‘Whichare the right networking events for me?’

“Each step has so much in it to unpack…”

Pretty soon you’re in overwhelm, instead of having a clear and simple path to follow!

Long-term v short-term (move the needle) tactics

While building credibility and visibility over time through things like social media pages, media appearances, and posting online content are important, these are long-term tacticsthat should sit alongside your short-term tactics that most quickly move the needle. When you are very busy and can only do a few things well, your focus as a professional advisor should be a simple plan that you can execute to move relationships along weekly.

While I’ve provided some ideas to think about, I’m aware that I’ve posed even more questions! This idea of creating an online and offline networking plan is (alongside creating a personal brand) the most popular topic people ask for help on, most commonly as a team workshop, where they can learn the concepts and apply them into a personalised plan on the spot. If this topic has created more questions than answers for you, let me know how I can help! Julissa

I hear this all the time! Sometimes your contacts choose your competitor because he or she seems better than you or cheaper than you. But most of the time your contacts will fail to reach out to you because they forget about you, or don’t realise you are the perfect fit.

What to do about it?

Educating your audience with quality content that clarifies what you do and gives examples will help them see where they fit with you. Doing this regularly will help you stay visible. Connecting meaningfully and building real relationships strengthens trust.

Position your profile.

Most people’s LinkedIn profiles are little more than a list of jobs they’ve had, or simply a copy of a general CV. But this tells the reader little about you as a professional individual; nor has it been reviewed to support your current goals or written with a particular reader in mind… so it doesn’t really speak to anyone.

When I work with people on their profiles, we always start with a goal – their purpose for using LinkedIn! For individuals, this might be finding the next role or building their client base; for teams, it’s usually about helping them shine as professionals in order to build trust with clients, contacts, other stakeholders or with their own leadership team.

In thinking about how well you have positioned your personal brand, these questions might help:

What is your goal in building your profile?

Is your LinkedIn profile weighted towards the experience and knowledge that is most relevant to your current professional goals?

Have you considered whether your profile or CV talk to the audience who can help you achieve your current goals?

Does your summary on your LinkedIn profile (or bio elsewhere) clearly demonstrate the value you bring to stakeholders… backed up by proof of where you have achieved this?

What’s the golden nugget in your purpose, passions or past experience that makes you different from everyone else?

Positioning your profile means creating a lens through which you want your audience to look at your career. Like a ‘theme’, this shapes the story of your career so we can see the unique value you bring as a professional today. It’s not about making things up or exaggerating your achievements – but it IS about owning the knowledge, talents, skills and experience you have, and crafting a well-written profile that very clearly demonstrates these qualities.

Getting content engagement and personal brand visibility among the right people: Share your articles with well-thought-out short intro posts

I recently shared a process and some sample topics to help write high quality and differentiated LinkedIn articles, either for yourself or others, when you have limited time. This was particularly relevant to advisors and directors of professional service businesses, and the people who support them.

Of course, you don’t want to work hard on that quality article only to find that very few people will even see it. It’s important to work on gaining maximum visibility among your target audience, too.

Here are some important steps for the SHORT POST you write to accompany the article when you are sharing it with your audience on LinkedIn.

(If you don’t know what I’m talking about feel free to drop me a line, or take a look at my short posts on my LinkedIn profile as examples.)

This will help to increase your article’s achievement in terms of eyeballs and brain engagement… among the right people!

Give your audience a reason to read. Introductory sentences could be made up of one of:

An eye-catching statement straight from the article

A summary of what the article is about

A statement of who would benefit from reading and what they’ll get from it

Include key words such as industry types who you are targeting in the article, or topic words that people might search for

Persuasive/emotive (but not promotional) language that entices people to read e.g. ‘A must-read if you are struggling with…’

A question that makes the audience identify with the content e.g. ‘Is this you?’ or ‘Have you experienced this…?’ or ‘Do you have problems with…?’

Make your article work harder. LinkedIn will share your article when you hit publish. Schedule a second share that month, and future share/s in upcoming months. Each time you share, you should write a different introductory sentence in your post, to entice people to read in various ways. I’ve often got more engagement on second and third shares!

Include a few hashtags of relevant keywords that people might use if searching for this type of content (or words they might be engaging with) e.g. #TaxUpdate #BusinessPlanning #RoyalCommission (!)

Be mindful of the time of day you are posting – as most people access LinkedIn on their phones, try for before/after work hours, or if that’s impossible, during typical lunch/coffee break times. You could use a scheduling program to schedule future shares of an article, once it is published – in this way you can control the timing without physically posting at that time.

Where possible, tag in highly relevant people (but check confidentiality before publishing – e.g. case studies) e.g. event organisers or people whose work you’ve referenced or who worked with you on the project/IP behind the article. This will extend the reach of your article significantly. DON’T just tag a bunch of people because they represent your target market (more on representing your personal brand through stylish posting in a future article!).

As always, keep in mind that people are busy and don’t care about your content nearly as much as you do. It’s all about WIIFM – What’s In It For Me? Make sure this is clear not just in the article, but also in your introductory short post.

“The number of hits means nothing unless the people seeing your content are the RIGHT people for your purpose.”

And remember that the number of hits on your article means nothing unless the people seeing your content are the RIGHT people for your purpose – whether that’s gaining new clients, influencing people or simply giving people something to think about.

The question was posed, ‘What process can I use to help a busy director to create quality content for an article?’

It’s important that the content, voice and perspective belong to the person publishing the article, and this is the big challenge for professional advisers and directors who just don’t have the time to pen articles themselves. The internal marketing team can support them by creating a process to draw the article out of them during a short ‘writing meeting’, after which they can polish the article and send it to the director/adviser for final approval.

In this way, you can retain the advice and even the unique voice of the original author of the content, by using their responses and their words to create the article.

Here’s the process I suggest for those assisting someone to write an article, or for those who are writing their own but need a little inspiration and structure to ensure their article is a worthwhile read.

Pick one of these two core areas that people want an adviser or senior professional person’s perspective on. Pick your related topic that appeals to your target audience, such as ‘tax time for small businesses in farming’ (be specific to be interesting!) and answer the following questions:

Addressing a business problem

What’s a common business problem or challenge for your clients? Give an example/story.

Why is this such a common problem? What don’t clients know/what are they getting wrong?

Why is this problem dangerous if not addressed correctly? Another example/story of when this has happened, or when it’s been avoided?

Outline a possible solution in every day language. Try to use steps that summarise your advice in a tangible way.

OR:

Responding to a recent media piece or other information – ask one of these to build an article

What’s something you’ve read/heard about in the media lately that may affect your clients? Summarise the news item in your own words and explain how it may affect clients, and what they should do about it. Can we link to the original news item or others involved in this space?

What was your take on a recent business/professional development event you attended? What key points stood out to you, what’s your experience/opinion of these, and how do they affect your clients? What do your clients need to know? Did you get a photo of the event? Can we link to the organisers/others?

How do recent legal/compliance changes affect your clients? What do they need to know and do?

One last thing: be sure to use ‘client speak’, not ‘around the office speak’, when writing! LinkedIn is a professional platform but your language should still be accessible. Imagine you were answering a client’s questions, face-to-face. Write it that way. More on this topic soon!

The theme was building trust online, and the key take-away that came from the discussion was that despite the challenges of a breakdown in trust for the financial industry this year, the basics of integrity, quality service and building meaningful human relationships remain paramount.

This was certainly my message for how to develop a strategy online! As I mentioned in the talk, you wouldn’t go up to a random person on the street, stick a business card in their face and yell, ‘Buy my stuff!’ – so why do people do this online? Yes, you need to confidently let people know how you can help, but remembering there are real humans behind the screen and treating them the way you’d like to be treated is still essential.

You wouldn’t go up to a random person on the street, stick a business card in their face and yell, “Buy my stuff!”

Building a standout, trustworthy personal brand comes down to being great, caring about people, and then communicating that clearly and consistently to become a highly visible ‘go to’ in your field. It’s about building meaningful business relationships using both in-person and online tools. This is all true no matter what your industry.

The steps I covered to develop personal brand confidence & trust by creating a standout professional image online were:

Know your goals for developing your personal brand – be focused

Know your purpose (why you do what you do) – because people connect with meaning

Know your values (how you do what you do) – clarity on this builds trust

Know when you are in flow: what you are really good at and how you love to make change – you will be most effective here

Know what others value in the work you do

Determine your Point of Difference & the value you bring as an individual – 3 key messages

Gather proof e.g. case studies, testimonials, list credentials / experience

Work on your ‘look’ – in person & online e.g. profile photos

Write out your positioning – title, bio, elevator pitch

Build your thought leadership with great content

I regularly address these 10 points in keynotes, workshops and articles, and they are looked at in depth in my book on personal brand strategy.

Thanks to the AFA Perth committee for their invitation to present and their warm welcome. It was also a great pleasure to present in such a creative space as Paper Mountain in Northbridge – this made for a business networking event with a difference!
