Too often, as an advisor and facilitator, I’ve seen extraordinary amounts of money and value left behind, because of a lack of strategic thinking.

Leaders – are your teams leaving money and value on the table… or even wasting money, because of where they are spending their attention and time?

Here are some examples I see on the regular!

1. The up-and-coming department coordinator who isn’t yet across the whole business, or how leaders think.

Example: This go-getter has recently been promoted to, or come in at, a senior role that is quite new to them. Sure, they have acquired a qualification in the field and maybe a few runs on the board, but they are still learning the depths of complexity and strategic thinking required to understand how what they focus on affects the whole business. Moreover, they are proud of achieving their recent status and top of mind for them is proving themselves – which often translates to proving ‘I don’t need any help’.

Consequence: Unfortunately, their excitement can look like overconfidence and decision-making that is not based on the full picture; their insecurity can make them a roadblock for getting important information to senior leaders who need to make informed strategic decisions. Insightful strategic reports from the outside consultant, who has been engaged to provide expertise, are not passed on to leadership by the account manager, forcing the consultant to choose between going over their head or surprising the exec team when they reference the report in a leadership meeting! Not an efficient use of the consultant’s OR the leadership team’s time… and worse, important insights and recommendations fall through the gaps.

2. The senior program manager with a technical background, who doesn’t get the BD.

Example: A brilliant senior project or program manager who truly understands the industry, making them a great asset to the organisation. They can really get into the ‘head’ of the target market. However, they do not wear a BD or marketing ‘hat’ when developing or promoting their programs – they are not naturally oriented towards this way of thinking, they are not trained in this space and not held accountable to client acquisition or revenue goals. Typically, they manage an education or networking event program that is central to the organisation’s brand-building and growth goals – yet the program manager may not even be aware this is the ultimate purpose of the program.

Consequence: The turnout and turnover are not what they could have been / Game-changing educational content that would make the organisation more competitive doesn’t reach enough of the staff or the learning isn’t embedded well / Networking and value-add opportunities among the clients and business community are not leveraged / The program fails to achieve its brand-building and/or BD objectives.

3. The relatively junior event planner who has been (wrongly) tasked with running your marketing and stakeholder communications, too.

Example: I’m booked to give a keynote or run a workshop for a networking/professional development event. I provide promotional ideas and value-adds around the presentation. These are often free, low-cost, or a money-making opportunity for the client, such as a ticketed Masterclass or content for their blog/podcast/social media. However – these suggestions are forgotten/ignored by the junior team responsible for putting the event together (even when prompted during pre-meetings) – because they’re not across marketing strategy.

Consequence: See #2 above. Also, essential strategic links between event programs and core marketing objectives and target audiences are not achieved.

Solutions

Leaders – don’t forget that most of your staff don’t think like you! They come from a different area of expertise or experience, and most likely a different motivation.

That means you must lead a coordinated, cross-functional approach to strategy, brand, sales/BD, marketing, stakeholder communication, networking, and learning and development.

You must make strategic objectives and expectations of teamwork clearly known to department and team leaders.

You must ensure your line managers are equipped to make strategic decisions and that they bring their teams along to achieve goals, holding them accountable for results. And you must give them the space, support and time in their roles to achieve this.

Make this a part of the culture right through the organisation, requiring an aligned, clarified, goal-oriented approach.

Then equip your people to spot and respond to opportunities, through people development that stretches them to think strategically and problem-solve across the business… not operate in little siloes focused on protecting their domain!

At this time of the year I see a trend with clients planning ahead for where they want to take their brands in the new year. Companies, teams and individual professionals are currently scheduling in brand strategy and planning sessions for January and February, to ensure they can start the year with a strong, high-impact brand.

Below are some of the essentials to get right in your business or personal brand in 2023. Identify the gaps right now, and you have your plan to hit the ground running in the new year.

Have you ticked off the following?

Brand Clarity: You have recently engaged in a professional process to define, clarify or refresh your brand, resulting in a strategic document that clearly states your positioning and key messages for your target markets, and how this should be interpreted through all visual and written communications, as well as providing direction on how it should be communicated through your people in their conversations with clients, contacts, and each other.

Your Online Presence is up-to-date, such as a user-friendly, optimised website that clearly communicates your brand messages and your core offering. You have a process in place to refresh web pages regularly with new content (such as publishing articles and videos) that keeps you visible and relevant to your audience.

Team members who are responsible for bringing in business or maintaining client relationships (such as accountants, lawyers, financial advisors and consultants) have the appropriate tools to empower their personal brands, in order to be seen as peers or trusted partners to decision-makers, and to assist them to develop their online and offline network-building.

Team members who are the ‘face of the business’ or who communicate in any way with clients and stakeholders (even internally!) have a scheduled opportunity early in the year to personally connect with the brand they represent and to reflect on what they want to communicate. They have also received or are scheduled for training on first impressions and communication skills in business.

A strong Brand Communication Plan: If you are in professional services or B2B, you have a comprehensive LinkedIn strategy forming a core component of your 2023 Marketing Plan, that is guided by your Communications Team but involves a range of staff representing the business.

Why does a checklist like this matter?

A clearly defined and consistently communicated brand cuts through the noise and stays top of mind with your audience – this immediately makes you more competitive among others working off a hit-and-miss plan! I encourage you to use this short checklist of core brand components to help you plan your 2023 brand strategy for standing out and staying top of mind with your target audience.

Happy new year!

Where do most people need support to continue to grow their personal brand, beyond initial planning and launch?

All of my work with individuals starts with Personal Brand Profiling, to get clear on their personal brand positioning messages, along with their audience and goals. After that, most will work on refreshing their LinkedIn profiles to reflect that positioning, and from there we create detailed personal marketing plans which may include LinkedIn and networking strategy and sales/business development plans.

Some clients ask for specialised help in particular areas such as building a personal website, creating a speaker profile and topic outline, or coaching in professional confidence in meetings, presentations or networking.

“They may have been thinking about achieving these goals for some time but don’t know where to start or how to get it done efficiently and effectively…”

I enjoy the structure of a handful of focused intensives to get the above goals achieved with clients. They are busy people who want to achieve a lot but also have a lot on their plates. They may have been thinking about achieving these goals for some time but don’t know where to start or how to get it done efficiently and effectively. Intensive one-to-one workshops over a few weeks achieves that.

While people can get a lot done in a short time clarifying their personal brand, creating a plan for reaching their target audience and even launching on one or two platforms… where most people really struggle is in keeping the momentum up that is required to actually carry out your plan successfully and build the brand with communication over time.

Watch the video and read on below for examples of what people ask for support on when working on their personal brands…

What does it mean to communicate a personal brand successfully?

Communicating your personal brand is about achieving set goals for what it is supposed to help you achieve. After clarifying your brand messaging, you need to get it out there – clearly and consistently – and keep layering your communications to build impact over time. In addition, you need to actually do the things that are on your personal brand outreach plan for it to work!

“…you need to actually do the things that are on your personal brand outreach plan for it to work!”

This might include strategies like:

specific network-building activities and conversations you need to have

research you need to do and connections you need to make on LinkedIn

introductions you need to acquire through a planned method

website or media content you need to produce on an ongoing basis

well-thought-out social media posts you need to publish

speaking engagements you need to obtain.

As you can see, there is a lot to do after planning, and this is overwhelming to many people. With the best of intentions, busy people get side-tracked and pretty soon six months have gone by and they have done almost nothing on their plan to build their personal brand! I do have clients who come back a year after their initial work feeling they have to start again because nothing has been achieved in between.

To ensure the strategic work on their personal brands isn’t wasted, many clients have asked for support on a monthly basis to not only ensure things get done, but to make sure they are done right – because lack of skill or confidence are big reasons why people procrastinate on new tasks!

Clients will come to me with questions on finer details and challenges they want guidance on, through the lens of their personal brand positioning. They may want hands-on support from our team on getting quality content out regularly or fine-tuning particular pieces. They may want more coaching to build confidence in areas they want to develop, like speaking and networking. Or they may mainly just want someone to keep them on track with their plan and keep them accountable to goals they have decided are personal priorities.

Regular support not only gets things done but steadily builds confidence in communicating a personal brand!

Questions I regularly help my clients answer in support sessions include:

What do you think of this article / post?

Am I being too promotional if I highlight this service on LinkedIn?

Should I participate in this promotional opportunity?

How’s my engagement level on LinkedIn?

Can I have a template for an email introduction request/response?

Can you review the wording of my email response to this contact?

I’ve lost regular contact with this important client. How can I re-engage?

I have updated my bio. What do you think?

How soon should I announce this change?

How often should I post about…?

Do you think this CV fits for this job/board role?

Should I connect with this person?

What networking events should I choose?

How can I start a conversation with this LinkedIn contact?

For me personally, being able to support clients month-by-month after planning and launching their personal brands, is one of the most rewarding aspects of my work, because I get to help them achieve along the journey and to witness close-up the results of our work together… I get to celebrate the successes with them along the journey, and that is such a joy.

After my recent wailing to a friend about the persistence of this kind of language in what is supposed to be professional communications to smart business people, he laughed and termed it ‘The Pretend Personal’.

I know I’m not alone in thinking that over-excited language and punctuation, often repeating the same tired words and phrases, has lost any impact it ever had on online audiences.

Now I’m an expressive person – I get excited about ideas, I talk with my hands, my voice goes up and down and is kind of on the loud side. I can’t help it – I have 100% Latin blood! This sometimes comes across in my online content too, in videos, articles, posts and newsletters. I have in the past been guilty of unnecessarily excited language, but I have learned to scale it down to try to say what I really mean. I have learned that it can be human and personal, while professional. I have learned the importance of understanding your audience, right at this time.

What kind of audience do you want?

If you want a herd of sheep to follow you to the ends of the earth, constantly seeking help but never doing anything to help themselves, use pretend-caring, over-the-top motivational rubbish in your promotions.

If you want to work with intelligent, pro-active people to help them achieve their goals on the way to going places and making things happen… treat them like they have a brain.

What does your audience look like right now?

Things change quickly in the world we live in. Language we used mindlessly three years ago is no longer relevant or acceptable. The ways consumers engage with brands has totally changed in a few short years. What we seek out or reject online comes down to the relevance and resonance of content, right this minute.

So let me tell you where the Pretend Personal sits now.

Over-the-top enthusiasm is cringe-worthy.

Boasting, thinly veiled as gratitude, is a total turn-off.

Classic sales messaging (“Buy now!” / “Don’t miss out!” / “Can you afford not to?”) is insulting people’s intelligence.

And don’t get me started on bulk emails that begin with ‘Hi Jane!’ and then continue to insert Jane throughout the email. Jane doesn’t really think you’re talking especially to her.

Treat people like the intelligent, Internet-savvy, busy people they are. Be real. That’s what works now.

If you’re a professional consultant or advisor, it’s absolutely necessary to be careful how you communicate your personal brand so that it is elegant, human, and appealing. Coming across too pushy or salesy will only do your reputation damage. The trouble is:

If you hold back on self-promotion, you are expecting people to read your mind.

On my favourite podcast for consultants, The Consulting Success Podcast, experienced consultant and business owner Michael Zipursky tells the story of Eric, a guy who left the corporate world to become an independent consultant, but was held back by a fear of promoting himself to others. Eric didn’t want to come across as too full of himself. But as Michael points out on this episode, if you refuse to promote yourself, you are expecting people to read your mind! How else will they understand what you can offer if you don’t tell them?

Despite personal branding being my thing, listening to this podcast did remind me that there are areas where I am expecting people to be mind-readers in my business. For example, I run several really well-received workshops for teams that I had previously not included on my website – I was waiting for enquiries before telling people about them! (They are on there now, by the way.)

Similarly with corporate personal brand strategy consulting, it was important to demonstrate more widely NWC’s unique approach and how it makes sense for the business world we now live in. I am continuing to share this message through keynotes, the media, content writing and of course, the website.

When you’re going from being an executive in a company to running your own show, you MUST learn to self-promote because you no longer are part of a household brand; nor are you still in a situation where more work lands in your lap than you can deal with. Even if you are part of wider company, if you want to step up to the next level or win more clients for your team, you need to think about self-promotion.

To get the work, people have to know what you do and why they would want to work with you.

Some tips to promote your consulting or advisory services in a way that works for a professional personal brand:

Ensure you have made full use of your LinkedIn profile to explain what you do in detail, and to demonstrate how your past experiences serves this.

Spend time reflecting on your strengthsand achievements so that they come to mind when you are called on to communicate them – for example, in a performance review. In addition, clarifying your value as a professional will infuse all your communications with authentic confidence that can only serve you.

Think about the most important thing people need to know about you in order to want to find out more about doing business with you. This may be your experience on a big project, your area of niched specialisation, or a different approach you offer. When you meet someone new, frame your very first sentence in a way that gently draws attention to the things that matter most about what you do. This is not a sales pitch; it’s a lens you are inviting people to see you through, but it still takes preparation.

Be ready with business cards wherever you go, just in case someone asks to know more about what you do. It’s an old-fashioned idea… but I like it, especially if your card has a touch of the wow-factor to really leave an impression.

The question was posed, ‘What process can I use to help a busy director to create quality content for an article?’

It’s important that the content, voice and perspective belong to the person publishing the article, and this is the big challenge for professional advisers and directors who just don’t have the time to pen articles themselves. The internal marketing team can support them by creating a process to draw the article out of them during a short ‘writing meeting’, after which they can polish the article and send it to the director/adviser for final approval.

In this way, you can retain the advice and even the unique voice of the original author of the content, by using their responses and their words to create the article.

Here’s the process I suggest for those assisting someone to write an article, or for those who are writing their own but need a little inspiration and structure to ensure their article is a worthwhile read.

Pick one of these two core areas that people want an adviser or senior professional person’s perspective on. Pick your related topic that appeals to your target audience, such as ‘tax time for small businesses in farming’ (be specific to be interesting!) and answer the following questions:

Addressing a business problem

What’s a common business problem or challenge for your clients? Give an example/story.

Why is this such a common problem? What don’t clients know/what are they getting wrong?

Why is this problem dangerous if not addressed correctly? Another example/story of when this has happened, or when it’s been avoided?

Outline a possible solution in every day language. Try to use steps that summarise your advice in a tangible way.

OR:

Responding to a recent media piece or other information – ask one of these to build an article

What’s something you’ve read/heard about in the media lately that may affect your clients? Summarise the news item in your own words and explain how it may affect clients, and what they should do about it. Can we link to the original news item or others involved in this space?

What was your take on a recent business/professional development event you attended? What key points stood out to you, what’s your experience/opinion of these, and how do they affect your clients? What do your clients need to know? Did you get a photo of the event? Can we link to the organisers/others?

How do recent legal/compliance changes affect your clients? What do they need to know and do?

One last thing: be sure to use ‘client speak’, not ‘around the office speak’, when writing! LinkedIn is a professional platform but your language should still be accessible. Imagine you were answering a client’s questions, face-to-face. Write it that way. More on this topic soon!

In a recent interview, author of The 4 Hour Workweek Tim Ferris spoke with Marie Forleo about marketing advice. I’ve picked out a couple of points he made which I feel are essential to successful marketing for any business, but are often overlooked.

Business leaders often feel overwhelmed at how much marketing has changed and continues to change at a rapid pace – but the truth is, the vehicle is less important than the message.

Tim says: “My tendency is to look at things that have not changed. Let’s say you want to learn to draw. You can use a crayon, you can use a pencil, you can use a pen… You could think of all those tools… as different types of social media – but at the end of the day you have to know how to draw!”

When it comes to marketing a business, it is better to choose one relevant medium, such as LinkedIn for professionals and B2B, and learn how to do that exceptionally well, than to be across all the latest platforms but do them poorly or inconsistently (which also means poorly). A strong marketing plan focuses on a small number of strategically-chosen activities supporting a well-defined set of brand messages.

Clear communication of well-thought-out messages that fit your audience is more important than what social media platform you put them on.

Tim: “So for instance, in the world of social, that might really be investing in how to write copy… learning how to communicate with words!”

You can invest a lot of time and money into Facebook on the advice of an expert who says it’s the perfect fit for your industry… but if your content is boring, unclear, not what your target market cares about, or not presented in words and images that resonate with them – you’ve wasted your time and money on Facebook.

Rather than feel overwhelmed with how much there is to learn in marketing, and how quickly things change all over again – learn how to get the fundamentals of your business communications right. A little bit of regular, spot-on brand communication will be much more effective than a whole lot of rubbish.

I recently sent one of my clients, an education provider, a list of her company’s top 5 readers following a newsletter we sent out. She commented that all 5 readers had immediately made bookings following the mail out. The following month, she received further bookings worth thousands of dollars within a few hours of the next newsletter hitting inboxes.

Another client, a lawyer, said he received a big wrap from a LinkedIn contact on an article we worked on with him. This reader then sent it to over a dozen clients and contacts by way of introduction.

These on the surface look like examples of online marketing activity that has immediately been rewarded with new clients, bookings, or at the very least, warm leads. However, these communications – the newsletter and the article – were the tips of the branding and marketing icebergs. These items worked because, besides being of quality and value in themselves, were backed up by well-thought-out and consistently communicated business and personal brands, combined with a solid strategic plan.

It starts with real people

Having worked with a great many business owners and business development managers in professional services like accountants, lawyers and management consultants, I firmly believe that their approach to digital marketing and social media must mirror their traditional best practices for building the client base – and this has to do with real relationships with real people.

You could argue that relationships take time to build – so this is not a quick online strategy. This is true, but it’s not always about slowly getting to know people and gain their trust over time (though this is a valid and important consideration). A stand-out first impression can be made instantly, and this includes a certain level of trust and a readiness to work with you. Perhaps you’ve experienced an instant rapport or enquiry from a chance meeting at a networking event, or a quality introduction from someone influential, where the business just flowed. The same goes online!

The winning combination

So, when asked how do I create business opportunities online, quickly and effectively, I have to say that it’s rarely the email blast, the cold call, or the paid Facebook ad that gets me the new client. In fact, I spend little or no time and money on these tactics! For service-based businesses, I believe it’s a combination of:

Face-to-face (and virtual) meeting, greeting, relationship building by acting like a human being and treating others like human beings – in other words, being real and getting offline where possible; AND

Leveraging your time spent on #1 above by following up your coffee meetings, networking events, or regular chats with clients with online communication (particularly on LinkedIn).

This sounds simple and obvious, but the success is in the strategy and schedule: it’s all about planning and consistency – of brand messages, of target markets, of communication. Remembering all the time, you are a human speaking with humans, keeping it real. And in fact, few companies execute this combination really well.
