Everyone talks about AI in terms of efficiency, and sometimes productivity – but what does that really mean in terms of client value? To me, that’s about knowing the value you were already creating for clients before AI entered the picture – and how AI is able to amplify that now. What’s changed for me is how much more of my hard-won expertise, unique thinking and approach I can now bring to each client relationship, because AI has freed up time to apply more of what I already do well, and to keep improving on it. Here’s what that has looked like over the past year.

More time in my network, and using it with intent

I love to meet people, and I love to connect people – it brings me real joy.

So often I hear people say, “I know I need to make more of my networks, but it’s hard to find the time!”…and I can certainly relate. Now, I use AI to help me quickly create a targeted networking plan as I jump on a plane for short work trip, going beyond ‘Who should I reconnect with?’ or ‘What events should I catch?’ to ‘What strategic connection points can I look for in this list of coffee meetings?’

Even better, AI helps me make more of my network in service of clients, by intentionally connecting people. While AI is helping me with repeatable project management tasks, I now spend real time looking across my networks for the connections that will genuinely help a client with the problem they’re working on – a simple but meaningful way of creating extra value. That kind of matchmaking used to happen by accident, relying on my already overloaded brain to remember just the right referral at just the right time. Now I can build value-adding like this into projects on purpose.

Space to think, and the time to actually build what I think of

Creative ideas are constantly popping into my head, competing for attention with everything else in the week. Some of these are great ideas to help clients achieve even more of what they want and to gain a genuine competitive edge (for example, right now it’s helping them understand how to structure guidelines and processes for their teams to use AI in communications in a way that protects and builds their brand, rather than the brand drift and reputational faux pas we are seeing everywhere).

What’s changed is that there’s now room for me to sit with a business or client problem longer, work through something genuinely different and high-impact, and build it quickly enough to reach clients and audiences in a short amount of time, rather than leaving a great idea on a shelf for a year because the calendar never opened up.

Capturing the words, so I can focus on what’s between the lines

I often use AI to capture the fine detail of a client conversation, in a way both of us are comfortable with, so I’m not half listening while I try to take notes. That frees me to do the part clients actually pay me for, which is thinking properly about who they are, their specific context, and what they need next. I use it to interrogate my own thinking too: what haven’t I considered here, and what else should I be asking? It’s the same judgement I’ve always relied on, just tested from more angles – which provides the client with the advantage of fewer stones left unturned – fewer gaps and blind spots, more opportunities.

More time with the people who need it

There’s more time on the phone when someone needs it, an extra meeting booked in without a fight with my diary, and check-ins beyond the normal program allocation – a closer eye kept on clients, and a closer connection. I get to listen a little longer, pick up more detail in their journey, and provide extra resources and guidance.

New ways to help more people

I’ve conceived, built and launched new tools this year for measuring and planning professional confidence in the age of AI and organisational maturity levels in leadership brand development, the kind of idea that would have stayed in a notebook a few years ago. I’ve also launched and filled new public workshops on professional confidence, leadership branding and AI in communications for leadership audiences around the country, reaching and supporting far more people in a few months than I expected to.

AI has freed up time to apply more of what I already do well, and to keep improving on it.

Every one of these examples comes back to the same thing: what clients get from me is bigger and more useful than it was a year ago. The extra attention and thinking time that AI frees me to do is what make that possible. It’s also given me room to keep sharpening my own thinking on positioning in the AI era, so what I bring clients on that front keeps getting better too.

Want to know how we use AI in our work with clients? It’s in our FAQs.

“If you’re not clear on what matters most, it’s easy to get caught up in what matters now.”

– Shane M. Hatton

In my work with boards and leadership teams, I see leaders grappling with the challenge of competing priorities on a weekly basis.

Here are some examples of important things in business that don’t seem urgent… until they do…

A commitment to Leadership Development… until your Strategy fails or your leadership becomes toxic.

Building a clear, aligned Culture… until your stakeholders get a different experience than what your Brand has promised.

Fostering Team Belonging & pride in the organisation… until you lose your best staff and other great talent look elsewhere.

Being clear on what matters most allows you to keep an eye on tomorrow, to see the bigger picture, to see how everything connects together… and to see the next important step.

“Being clear on what matters most allows you to keep an eye on tomorrow, to see the bigger picture, to see how everything connects together… and to see the next important step.”

As we move through challenging economic times and yet more change… there are lots of things that seem urgent… but what’s MOST IMPORTANT to get right now, for a sustainably successful future?

For a successful future… ask the ‘most straightforward question possible’:

I recently read about a conference where the keynote speaker was praised for “asking the most straightforward question possible”. A clear, simple question can cut through the noise, get to the heart of the matter, and point to the pathway forward.

What’s your ‘most straightforward question possible’? It could be…

What’s the biggest challenge right now? / What’s the biggest opportunity right now?

What’s the biggest risk around the corner?

If we focused on one thing for the next 3/6/12 months, what is the one thing that will most move the needle?

But don’t keep it at high-perch level – follow this with:

What are the steps?

Who needs to be involved?

What do they need to get the job done?

What does doing a great job look like?

How will we know we’ve succeeded?

When it comes to people-related business challenges (which you could argue, are all business challenges), the solution can seem complex and unclear. Having conversations that start with the idea that “We always strive to see what matters most” can lead you to these types of questions… and their answers.

My personal experience navigating power dynamics in business

Around the time I turned 30, I left a teaching career to start a commercial photography business. In those early days, I did a lot of free work to get my name out there, and this included event photography at business events – a key strategy to meet more of my target market. Typically, I would ask for the opportunity to promote my services in exchange for the photographs, which would include a combination of a display of brochures or business cards, an opportunity to network with guests, and an introduction on the night by the MC.

I worked really hard in those early days to raise my profile, including taking my professional image very seriously. I was not one of those photographers that turned up in khaki pants covered in pockets; I wanted to be seen as a professional at professional events. I had carefully crafted a bio that positioned me as working in the corporate and small business space, had worked with a professional designer to produce a glossy website to show my work, and had spent countless hours taking and editing photos for little or no pay, to build my portfolio.

Despite the attention to professional details and sheer hard work, there were roadblocks that I could not control. One night when I was taking photos for the promotion exchange described above, something happened that left me so disillusioned that I can still feel my frustration as I recall the experience a decade later. Yet, it was such a small thing that no-one else would have noticed…

After a couple of hours energetically running around taking photographs, bringing 110% to my engagement with people and to my effort to include everyone in the coverage of the event, providing the best service possible to the host… it was time for acknowledgements and introductions. The host rattled off the bios of the speakers and ‘formal’ sponsors, and then just as he was closing off, he threw in: “Oh, and this is Julissa. She’s a lovely girl, so… yeah, get her to do your photos.”

My heart sank to my stomach. Where was the business description I had painstakingly written for the acknowledgements, had emailed over, and then had double-checked to see the host had at hand on the night? In this room of mainly businessmen, I was just the lovely girl in the corner, not the professional I had worked so hard to be. I was the afterthought – and the mention I got, I would have been better off without.

I’m now 41 and in my working life I’ve changed careers 3 times, including starting 2 businesses. These changes have represented marked shifts which required learning an entirely new set of skills, building a new network and marketing myself in a new way each time, in order to be confident and credible.

When I think back on the times when I was navigating each new environment, I find there are ‘power’ stories and ‘no power’ stories – times when I felt personally powerful to create change, and times when I felt that the power was in someone else’s hands. But when I dig deeper, I see that there were both internal and external factors that contributed to whether I felt powerful or not – in other words, much of the power resided with me, even if I didn’t recognise it.

For example, a pivotal moment when I was kicking off my brand consulting business was when I took a couple of hours out to brainstorm my ‘superpowers’ – my key strengths that are truly at the heart of who I am, that contribute value to others. I wrote these out in huge letters in chalk, straight onto my office wall! This was an incredibly empowering experience, not simply because it made me feel good, but more importantly because it gave me such clarity on what I offer and the words to communicate that. From that day on, my consulting services and brand really began to take shape, because I was coming from a place of personal power and confidence when I spoke about my work.

On the flip side, as I started to attract larger consulting clients, I needed to navigate the world of writing and presenting significant proposals of work – a whole different ball game to sending off an outline for one workshop! Understanding motivations, buying cycles, budgets, decision-maker dynamics, the art of negotiation… to be honest this is one of the biggest learning curves I’ve experienced and I’m still learning about it. There are times when I have felt really disheartened after putting hours into meetings and proposal writing to find that it falls flat. At these times I have felt like I have no power – and once or twice I was even convinced that I didn’t get the gig because I’m not a man. While that may have been a factor in a couple of scenarios I can think of, when I really look at it, there are things I am learning to do differently to increase my ability to affect outcomes. I am always trying to strengthen how clearly I communicate value and demonstrate proof of results, what questions to set up to ensure my proposals hit the mark, and what steps need to come before I even write the proposal, to set myself up for success.

It is unfortunately not an exaggeration to say that as women, our external environments can put us on the back foot from the moment we are born, and many of us experience this as a part of daily life. Being overlooked, misjudged, underestimated, unheard and mistreated are sadly too common an experience for women – all of these things have happened to me, despite seeing myself as quite a confident communicator. There is now plenty of data to demonstrate the frequency of these experiences for women, as well as the fact that the problem is compounded for women belonging to additional marginalised groups.

It’s important to acknowledge and address power problems as a society, in business, and in the home. At the same time, there is so much value in working to increase your sense of personal power and how you influence for mutual good in all these environments.

How can we best serve others in ways that feel authentic and easy for all parties… to help us all create thriving business?

I have been interviewing clients and contacts in leadership positions across professional services about what they see as the most immediate concerns in their industries, in order to understand what is most relevant right now.

The kinds of answers I’m getting are:

Crisis management and immediate next steps just to deal with what is in front of us

Making do with less

Managing significant change and the high stress that comes with this

Preparing for the strong possibility of losing (more) clients when businesses struggle or fail

Continuing to adjust to a home/office working balance for our staff

Looking at what we need to do differently from now on

These may sound obvious, but they have crucial implications for what we deliver and how, and what we communicate and how, in order to stay relevant and visible.

In my business, what I’m finding is working best right now is:

Delivering highly accessible (short, sharp and affordable) strategy sessions and online options, rather than aiming for substantial programs of work

Focusing on my most practical, ‘need help now’ offerings rather than the more aspirational, big-goal themes

Maintaining visibility among networks by connecting meaningfully with contacts (via phone and Zoom meetings, some coffees), and by demonstrating what I’m working on (via LinkedIn and email)

What people want: Clear leadership & practical help!

The current free webinars and short online courses I am delivering are proving popular because they are highly accessible and because they focus on what people need right now – clear strategic leadership and practical help. In my business, this is around personal brand and network-building strategy for professional people and businesses, delivered quickly, simply and affordably. I hope these insights encourage you to dig deep to find your most relevant offerings and ways to stay visible and helpful to your audience.

Article 1 was about the dangers of unchecked confusion and emotion online.

In this article, I relate my personal experience with ‘identity’ during isolation, and why personal branding is so helpful right now.

How are you coping with the (identity) crisis?

Who is that woman in her active wear? She seems to have a Monday-Sunday gym clothing combo on rotation.

She misses the sound of her high heels on the city pavement.

Her car is gathering cobwebs around the tyres.

She’s doing the grocery shopping on a weekday because she’s got the time (and she equally feels dread and excitement about it).

Her coffee meetings are on Zoom.

Her client workshops are on Zoom.

Her after-work drinks are on Zoom (and they are not that much fun).

She is grateful for Zoom. And yet… feeling the energy of presenting from a stage or sharing the space with the people you are working with is remembered wistfully, like the fading memory of her last holiday.

Weirdly, she feels more connected to her family than ever… but she misses their hugs.

She’s cooking a hearty meal by 6pm.

She’s going to bed at 9pm because she hasn’t just arrived home.

She’s waking up by 5am because her brain is totally confused (and she’s had enough sleep since she went to bed at 9).

These days I hardly recognise myself.

It’s a very strange thing, how this world crisis is creating ripple effects of all sorts… little mini-crises at the individual level. In my discussions with friends and colleagues over the last few weeks, I have heard many versions of my story above.

For some, it may be simply the surprise and confusion at finding yourself looking different, speaking and thinking about different things, and spending your days in a different way. For others, it may be a bigger personal crisis, like questioning your line of work or what you value spending time on (or with whom!). And for others, the crisis is more immediate, and it’s about putting food on the table today.

I am really grateful that I am only experiencing light frustration and a fair helping of amusement as I observe myself attempting to work out what stays the same and what must change. And I am also finding that my years of work helping myself and others think purposefully about ‘personal branding’, or who you are professionally, is proving to be a solid foundation in navigating such uncertain times. Defining who you are and what you want to communicate when it comes to your professional contribution is not only helpful for being clear to others, it makes it clear to yourself.

With a new flexibility to our days and time to think like never before, this is the perfect opportunity for many of us to finally get clear on our personal brand messaging. We have a unique opportunity to get reflective, digging a little deeper to fine-tune our passions and value points and to build a strong plan to communicate it outwardly. It’s one way to nurture yourself, reignite inspiration… and maybe, get over that mini-identity crisis 😉

Hope this is helpful! If you have a topic you would like me to address in the ‘Online Personal Brand Tips for Crisis Mode’ series, please let me know!

There is a lot of talk among owners of accounting firms about building business advisory services to grow and evolve their business models. There are differing opinions on this, but what is really interesting is Panalitix’s findings on what really drives accountants.

I’m not a business coach but I do work with many accountants and accounting firms on business and personal brand strategy, and I’d like to share some of my take-aways from the terrific Panalitix webinar lead by Colin Dunn this week. Like Colin, the main thing I hear from new clients is, ‘We want to grow’ and ‘We want to do more business advisory work’, but unpacking what growth really looks like in terms of changes in the business and in terms of day-to-day activity… and whether this actually aligns with what the accountants really want, can be another thing altogether.

What accountants really want

The findings of the Panalitix global study of owners of accounting firms found that building business and being entrepreneurial were not highly-ranked values, particularly in the APAC region compared to the U.S.

What accountants were prioritising above this was financial security, making a contribution, enjoying work and creating a lifestyle that included time out. While accounting partners may be saying, ‘We want growth’ and are often willing to embrace change, in reality they are time-poor and risk-averse.

“While accounting partners may be saying, ‘We want growth’ and are often willing to embrace change, in reality they are time-poor and risk-averse.”

A realistic way to grow your business advisory

While many say compliance work is disappearing, Colin argues that it is changing rather than disappearing entirely. Accounting firms have a choice of being a compliance-only business focused on ultimate efficiency, or using compliance as a foundation for other more holistic work.

The major reason accounting firms get stuck when trying to grow their business advisory services is that they don’t realise or won’t take the amount of time and effort necessary to provide a robust advisory. This involves strategic planning and up-skilling your team – and not just the partners!

Colin suggests thinking of growth in 3 stages:

Stage 1: Fix your issues and get your internal processes at maximum efficiency, to create space for growth.

Stage 2: You are now gaining excess capacity

Stage 3: With that capacity, do the work to grow the business through product development, internal training, marketing, sales processes and delivery. Consider how your wider team can support in these areas (with the right training) so you are not just loading up the partners with a whole lot of extra work.

What might your business advisory look like?

If you really haven’t done much of this at all at your firm, there is a lot to learn, and many ways to go about it. But the question to always start with is: How can I support my clients to achieve their business goals?

Of course, that means you must actually be clear what your clients’ goals are – what they really are, not what you think they are (as we’ve seen, what people really want and what is said or assumed are not always the same things!). Colin suggests some tools for researching your clients in depth, but even if you just start by scheduling time to talk to your top clients one-to-one… the clarity and the relationship-building that results is pretty powerful.

Your clients’ goals will inform the plan you put in place for them. An advisor of course needs to understand all the pieces in the business puzzle – like systems & processes optimisation, product development, pricing strategy, sales processes and pipeline, client/customer management, brand and marketing. That’s not to say that an accounting firm needs to be across all these areas – developing key relationships with trusted consultants and suppliers can be the best way to assist your clients here – but being able to spot the weaknesses, the things to consider, the things to plan for and measure, are part of the business advisor’s role.

Like anything, it’s about developing a system that allows you to deliver this level of business advice, and tie it seamlessly with your work in structures, tax advice and other compliance.

What next?

Sounds like a lot of work? Um, yes. So the question becomes: What do you most want to achieve in your business, and what level of change and growth will get you there? Do you need to plan for a small change? Incremental growth? Or are you going all-in with a full-service advisory and a network of supporting service providers you will project-manage for your clients?

Communicating what you can offer to new clients

As Panalitix point out in this blog post, ‘if you’ve only ever offered tax and compliance services to a client, why should they believe you can help them improve their business?’ Once you have a new system in place to deliver more, you must boost your growth by ensuring you are communicating your abilities very clearly in your branding, marketing, and through your people. This will assist new clients to understand what they can expect from you, and will attract the right kinds of clients your way – the ones who want to develop an ongoing relationship with an advisor they can trust.

Communicating what you can offer to existing clients

Communicating your additional services to existing clients is not about being a ‘salesperson’! It’s about proactively providing specific information based on what you see in your clients’ numbers, that will inform their decision-making in the business. Being a ‘trusted advisor’ by showing your interest and care, and building on these initial starting points with great insights into their businesses.

Final thought

Advisory is an art as well as a science. It starts with clear goals and a strategy, but it centres around human connection, proactively seeking to solve clients’ problems, and a desire to empower them to achieve their goals.

I have a theme word for 2019… CONNECTION.

I want to explore how making time for more frequent and meaningful CONNECTION with people, with my world, and with myself, can open up new possibilities and a more satisfying way of living.

To go from often being too busy for people… experiencing brain fog or overwhelm… cramming so much in each day and feeling like the to do list is never done…

To feeling I have room to breathe… to reflect, explore, enjoy the unexpected… and really talk.

I talk to people all the time, I’m out and about all the time… I know my work with clients and audiences is meaningful and connects with them… and yet I’m seeking even more connection.

Could more connection bring me more joy and enjoyment on a daily basis? Less feeling of ‘the grind’?

Could more connection bring more satisfaction to relationships, beyond the ones I give most attention to?

Could more connection make business flow effortlessly, all the time?

Could more connection give me a greater feeling of peace?

Could more connection create… more magic?

Though I’m sure that like me, a lot of people could use more connection, I know some people have it worked out. For example:

My friend got us such a thoughtful housewarming present when we bought our new home – a gold-coloured garden gnome and a welcome mat, which she knew we’d love – I doubt I’d even think of something like this. With a less hectic schedule, she is someone that I perceive as having more time in her day to reflect on what might be meaningful in a gift to someone else…

A businessperson I look up to calls me on a Monday morning from a café in Leederville, where he’s just hanging out, calling some contacts for a chat. Imagine a Monday morning like that…

A team of professional advisers I know prioritise socialising with clients and contacts in fun settings, because they know this is the quickest way to build a great business relationship…

“Besides the noble art of getting things done, there is the noble art of leaving things undone.” – Lin Yutang

Of course I’ve read the discourse on mindfulness, productivity, time management, outsourcing your life… and I’ve borrowed some tools from here and integrated some of them quite successfully into my life. But I want to take it to the next level, and I’m after some real-life examples from the community around me.

To help with my exploring of making time for more connection, I want to know:

What structures or strategies have you put in place to give you more time to connect with people, your environment, yourself?

What principles of connection do you live by?

What has prioritising connection brought you in business and in life?

“Life is not complex. We are complex. Life is simple, and the simple thing is the right thing.” – Oscar Wilde

Please do let me know your thoughts on the why and how of CONNECTION. I’d love to hear your story.
