And now, in the final piece in this edition:

How to get buy-in from leaders and team members on Personal Branding

While the personal brand strategic advisory you choose to work with will certainly be able to help you achieve buy-in for this important work with your leadership and wider team, there may be circumstances where you need to make the case first, be a champion for the cause, or help bring people along for the journey. Here are some considerations we look at when achieving an understanding with stakeholders about why this work matters.

Look at it from their perspective: The decision-makers

A business leader or a manager in charge of the purse strings looks for proof of concept, so preparing yourself by reading the best on the topic – trends, facts, examples of where it’s worked – is going to be important. Presenting a relevant case study or client testimonials from providers you are considering using or from another business that has undertaken a personal brand development strategy will be helpful.

One of a leader’s primary concerns is the organisation’s strategy and each team’s ability to set and achieve goals to get there. Understanding what’s most pressing at your organisation, and what will most move the needle, matters when bringing a new approach. Be prepared to make clear links to the organisation’s goals, brand and culture when proposing the personal branding strategy. Again, reading and researching can help you with this.

A lawyer, accountant, board director or other professional used to working from a ‘risk’ perspective will need to clearly understand the costs and other risks involved and understand how to mitigate these. Start with a trustworthy assessment tool or process to understand gaps. For example, we have developed simple but revealing tools to ask, ‘Where do your team members sit on the Trust Map?’ and ‘Where does your team rate on the Brand Confidence Scale?’ Use expert advice at the assessment, analysis and strategy-building stage, at a minimum, to set yourself up for success, avoid mistakes and ensure ROI.

Look at it from their perspective: The participants

Just the concept of personal branding can be scary for people – the ‘personal’ bit makes them wonder what they will have to expose to others, what they will have to put ‘out there’! For many, the term comes with negative connotations – all the overly self-promotional, inauthentic, shouty stuff they’ve seen on social media that they’ll do anything to avoid. For most, it requires stepping at least a little bit outside of their comfort zone, even if they deeply want to work on this area of their development.

Confidence and enthusiasm come from understanding why it matters, the difference it will make to them personally, and what’s involved.

We always start our stakeholder engagement with the ‘WIIFM’ or ‘What’s In It For Me?’ Everyone cares about how they are seen and how they see themselves! Everyone wants to feel part of a team that matters, bringing a valuable contribution. And everyone wants to be recognised for this value. We use tools like our ‘Do you know your personal brand?’ quiz to create awareness that your personal brand is out there, whether you’ve planned it or not! You may also like to refer to 360s and other assessments, or create a voluntary feedback process to answer the question, ‘How do I come across to others?’

People want to know what to expect, so outlining a high-level process of best practice that you plan to use for your strategy, and seeking input, is helpful here. You should work to reassure people when they wonder about ‘What will change?’ and ‘What does this mean for me?’ Providing some FAQs on personal branding like the ones we provide on our website is one very efficient and effective way to start to break down misconceptions and build confidence and enthusiasm for the process. Always make sure there are open lines of communication, and invite people right from the start to reach out with concerns or questions, ensuring they feel safe to do so.

Here in Part 2, I will show you that a Lunch ‘n’ Learn on Personal Branding isn’t going to cut it – and what to do instead.

In this series, we will show you:

Why a strong Personal Branding focus moves teams forward in leaps and bounds

What can I tell you from running countless Personal Branding presentations over a decade?

Everyone shows up for this topic.

(We love to know how others see us, and how we might influence that.)

Everyone is engaged – leaning forward in their chairs, taking notes, asking questions.

(Even the doubters say it was a fascinating topic and they learned something.)

Everyone knows the next step they want to implement.

(Some people actually do it.)

You usually get all these results in an hour.

You get a little more action in two.

In a half day you can create a plan.

With a follow-up session down the track, you can remember key take-aways and become accountable to achieve at least one action step.

But with an aligned team (or better yet, company) strategy on personal branding… you can shift a Culture to one of personal leadership, accountability, professionalism and pride in results. You can change how audiences see you. You can also, of course, change the results!

By starting at the very personal, individual level – Who am I here? What do I want to achieve? How do I contribute meaningfully? How does this benefit me? – you can transform how people:

See themselves.

See their team.

See the organisation.

Are seen by important others.

How to create a team- or company-wide strategy on personal branding

1. Decide what personal branding really is to you.

There are many definitions of personal branding – decide what it will be at your organisation – and what it won’t be.

For example:

It will be the process for developing your ‘Professional Identity’ – how you want to be seen by specific others in order to achieve meaningful, win-win results.

It won’t be coercion, smoke and mirrors, shiny wrapping, greenwashing/jumping on bandwagons, humble bragging, becoming Instafamous or an obsession with likes on LinkedIn.

2. Bust roadblocks to personal brand progress.

There are some very common roadblocks that stop people working on their personal brands, such as fear of self-promotion, fear of making a mistake, and lack of clarity about the what and how for their particular personal brand.

People have also seen plenty of cringeworthy examples of ‘rockstar’ personal branding that cause them to avoid it all together, despite knowing they need to define themselves as professionals and build awareness of this among networks.

Creating an opportunity to bring personal brand roadblocks to light and break down misconceptions is an important step. With teams, I start with a fun, magazine-style ‘Personal Brand Roadblocks Quiz’ followed by an in-depth collaborative sharing and problem-solving session to help people quickly feel safe moving into personal brand strategy.

3. Like any big move – you need a strategy.

While the details of your actions will differ depending on the organisation, the team, and the individual, a clear overarching strategic approach provides unity and direction. The time-tested approach we use focuses on 4 clear steps.

When building out your strategy, remember you need all 3 levels to your approach: Whole-organisation, Team or Department, and Individual.

4. Lead by example.

Leadership Branding of senior managers and the executive team (even the board!) is an increasingly popular approach to strengthen how leaders are seen internally and externally of the organisation. Clarity and consistency in communicating who they are as individual leaders and as a leadership team, sets the tone for the rest of the organisation to develop strong personal brands.

At NWC, our Purpose is ‘To help people grow in confidence and contribution, through knowing their value.’

Why? Because at the heart of our work is a belief that people do well when they think well of themselves.

And we’ve seen it in action, time and time again…

Seeing yourself differently to act differently

Whether it’s a board director, a CEO, a manager or a junior member of the team… everyone acts differently when they see themselves differently. Everyone can benefit from reflecting on how they see themselves, and how they need to see themselves, in order to step up to the next challenge.

In working with hundreds of professionals at every career level and in a wide range of industries, I’ve had the privilege of witnessing people’s professional confidence – as individuals and as teams – come to life.

As they dig deep to uncover the unique value they bring to others in their daily work, and develop clarity around the right ways to express that, they are visibly transformed.

They sit or stand taller and a new light ignites in their eyes.

They speak with more certainty and they emanate excitement.

They hold themselves to better standards and treat others the way they want to be treated.

They start to see they are worthy of being in the room with decision-makers and important stakeholders. That they have something to add, something to say, that is valuable.

Being seen as a peer to decision-makers

When your role is to build the business, develop client relationships, or simply to be a brand representative (everyone!)… you need to be trusted by stakeholders and audiences. Often this means being seen as a trusted advisor or peer to leaders and decision-makers.

How do you get your team members a seat at the table?

Clear and confident communication of value and expertise builds trust with important others. Positioning yourself at any introduction point (networking, LinkedIn, email, phone calls, website…) to highlight the value you bring to a specific audience is necessary to be seen the way you need to be seen… yet most people fail to do this impactfully!

First, you need to be visible to the right people. Next, you need to be saying the things that matter… with authenticity and conviction.

This means a clear strategy and action steps for building the personal brands of team members as trusted peers to specific audiences, through network-building, thought leadership and relationship nurturing – leveraging focused online and offline tactics that make sense for that team, that team member, that personal brand.

Beyond the Lunch ‘n’ Learn

You can probably guess from what I’ve described above that a Lunch ‘n’ Learn on Personal Branding isn’t going to cut it.

What can I tell you from running countless Personal Branding presentations over a decade? Everyone shows up for this topic (we love to know how others see us and how we might influence that). Everyone is engaged – leaning forward in their chairs, taking notes, asking questions. Everyone says it was a fascinating topic and they learned something. Everyone knows the next step they want to implement (and some people actually do it).

You usually get all these results in an hour. You get a little more action in two. In a half day you can create a plan. With a follow-up session down the track you can remember key take-aways and become accountable to achieve at least one action step.

But with an aligned team (or better yet, company) strategy on personal branding, including individual and team development experiences (such as personal brand foundations training, personal brand team strategy planning, individual coaching, measurable goals and team check-ins, say, over 3-6 months) you can actually transform how people see themselves, how they are seen by others, how they see each other as colleagues, and how they see their team as a differentiated, value-adding unit.

People who truly value their own and others’ contributions, and display that to stakeholders… that means real impact in business and in organisational culture. Now that’s exciting!

Stay tuned for more detail in our next post on how to develop the Personal Brands of your team members for impact.

Increasingly, I’m seeing the rise of Diversity & Inclusion programs to support professionals from different backgrounds or with different needs to flourish in their chosen career. This is an important stepping stone to achieving a business landscape that is inclusive and makes the most of the whole range of talent that is available. Until we achieve this, there remain challenges and experiences at work that are particular to certain groups or individuals, that need to be considered when designing an inclusive and supportive space to grow.

Some of the challenges I’ve heard people mention when they feel they don’t fit in with the ‘norm’, include – in their words:

“I’ve had to jump through more hoops to get to where I am.”

“I had to prove, right from the start, that I’d stick around.”

“I didn’t think I could ask for what I needed in order to make it work.”

“I can easily advocate for others, but not for myself.”

“I can’t do business development and sales conversations the expected way.”

“I am constantly talked over.”

“I feel like I’m not in the club.”

There has been much said about bias in the business world, along with the dangers of stereotyping and early conditioning in society. In workshops with teams and groups of professional people, when the issue of ‘who has power and who has not’ in business settings comes up in discussion, my approach is to separate experiences into ‘internal’ and ‘external’ landscapes.

While the external environments we face are filled with factors we individually can’t control, like workplace structures, hierarchies and cultural norms… there are some things on the outside we can personally influence – like how people see us.

More importantly, our internal environment – how we think about ourselves and how we choose to see situations and other people – is filled with opportunities for self-empowerment. When we take time to understand our strengths and the value this contributes to others, for example, we come from a place of heightened confidence, clarity and personal power.

So how do we create structures to explore how to increase our sense of personal power and grow our influence as professionals? To me, it’s about focusing on what we CAN do.

Empowering our diverse teams to grow their professional influence

While being transparent and being allowed to talk about the real issues facing staff are important in an organisational culture, it’s also important not to stay here, but to move on to constructive conversations and experiences that empower all staff to grow.

When asked to work directly with diverse teams, my approach to supporting staff to feel empowered follows these 3 P’s:

PERSONAL POWER

Developing our ability to influence others and empower ourselves

PERSONAL BRAND

How visible we are to others, and what we communicate about the value we bring

PROFESSIONAL CONFIDENCE

Our ‘internal world’: Mindset, self-talk, preparation and habits for confidence

The topics we cover in each of these key components include:

Personal Power

What does it mean to be ‘powerful’? How do we develop a sense of personal leadership in our own lives? How can an understanding of cognitive bias and influence research help us to be more empowered to achieve our professional goals? What practical tools are there for building influence and credibility with others?

Personal Brand

What’s important to know about first impressions, in person and online? How can we assess where our personal brand is currently at? What kinds of roadblocks do people experience in building their personal brands, and how can these be overcome? How do you develop clear personal brand positioning now, and how can you develop and grow your personal brand throughout your career?

Professional Confidence

How does our mindset and self-talk affect our performance in professional contexts? What daily habits can we build to strengthen our professional and personal confidence, and what tools do we need in our toolkit to tackle ‘scary’ scenarios and be ready for anything at work (such as pitching, presenting, networking, sales, leading, negotiating, difficult conversations)?

Building your program

If you are building out a program to empower your increasingly diverse teams – that’s great – and you need to create a safe space for this to unfold. The best place to start, whether or not you have experts working with you, is to engage your people in what they need to see in order to feel safe and enthusiastic about participating in your program. Being seen and heard should be at the start, middle and end of all your People & Culture programs!

Obviously, the foundation of this includes things like understanding company values, solid expertise and subject matter knowledge, communication skills and willingness to understand and help the potential client. But beyond this, what do staff need for success?

What are the less obvious tools that team members need to consistently attract new clients to the business?

Is your staff more like TOM or HARRY?

A first impression that counts

When Tom meets someone for the first time, or stands at the podium to address the room, or films a sales video… his body language, dress, language and tone all say that he is confident, professional, trustworthy. Harry turns up in a wrinkled shirt and often forgets his suit jacket. He bumbles along instead of walking tall and with purpose.

Advanced networking skills

Tom researches who will be at an event that he should talk to, presents well and has meaningful conversations, then carries out a follow-up plan. Harry simply turns up to networking drinks and stays in the corner with his buddies from the office.

An online impression that cuts through the noise

Tom’s LinkedIn profile is complete and up to date – but more than that, it’s positioned according to his professional goals at work, includes recent testimonials and projects to prove what he can do, and features a professional, personable profile photo. Harry’s got a fishing photo and has yet to update his profile with his most recent role. He has neglected to fill in the Summary section, which is the chance to position himself and talk directly to his target audience.

A clear plan of action leveraging online

Tom links his face-to-face networking and business-building with an online strategy to keep top of mind with his connections. He knows exactly how to connect with people and keep that connection going. Tom also combines his powerful LinkedIn profile with great online content and targeted, regular LinkedIn interactions, following a planned strategy and schedule. In this way, he maximises his 25 minutes twice a week on LinkedIn, and then gets on with his job. Harry floats about aimlessly on social media now and then, when he remembers.

Can your Toms step it up a notch further? Can your Harrys use some help? Systematic business building works all the way through to the individual in your company – a much better approach than leaving it to chance!
